Deim WEINGUT GERHARD DEIM Schönberg am Kamp, located in a basin at the northern end of Kamptal, is characterized by a microclimate with hot days and particularly cool nights. Here, the Gerhard Deim winery focuses on the strengths of the region: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The foundation of the winery is laid by cross-generational collaboration and the associated combination of cross-generational cooperation and youthful experimentation. Old and young are united by the pursuit of uncompromising high quality, and this begins with the care and nurturing of each individualistic vine, both for estate and reserve wines as well as for local and regional wines. Schönberger local wines are characterized by freshness, elegance, and drinkability. They reflect the most diverse soil formations and the microclimate characterized by the village’s basin location. In the Irbling vineyard, Riesling grows on the foothills of the Waldviertel gneiss-slate plateau, Grüner Veltliner on the Kalvarienberg. These vineyards are planted on weathered soil of silicate rock with a thin layer of alluvial loess loam, and in the Bernthal vineyard, the vines grow on loess-loam terraces several meters thick. Some of the Ried wines are matured in 500-litre barrels until the next harvest - an ideal size that guarantees a balance between natural oxygen input and not too much wood influence. The many small terraces and parcels in the vineyards can be vinified separately year after year due to the barrel size and thus optimally matured up to bottling. 93 Riesling * Schönberg Ried Irbling 2021 13 Vol.-%, cork, steel tank, €€€€ 93 Riesling * Schönberger Ried Irbling 2020 93 Riesling * Ried Schönberger Irbling 2019 91 Riesling * Schönberg 2021 12,5 Vol.-%, screwcap, steel tank, €€ 92 Riesling * Schönberg 2020 91 Riesling * Schönberg 2019 93 Grüner Veltliner * Schönberg Ried Kalvarienberg 2021 14 Vol.-%, cork, 500-l-barrel, €€€€€ 93 Grüner Veltliner * Ried Kalvarienberg 2020 Medium yellow-green with silver reflections. Delicately smoky, a touch of caraway, Golden Delicious apple; an attractively spicy bouquet. Juicy, ripe yellow fruit, mango and banana, well-integrated acidity, mineral, fine salty nuances on the finish; a sturdy food companion. For winemaker Christoph Edelbauer in Langenlois, everything is in harmony with nature and with the Kamptal: Winery, work and wine. He knows what he wants, loves the challenge and follows his path straightforwardly and consistently. Christoph pressed his first vintage in 2003, and today the winemaker cultivates 12 hectares of vineyards and processes the grapes at his architecturally-sophisticated winery in the middle of the Langenlois vines, which was completed in 2013. “Sustainable thinking and methods are deeply rooted in me. That is why it is important CHRISTOPH EDELBAUER 3550 Langenlois Im Neuberg, Kremser Straße 86 T: +43 (676) 7734811 info@weingut-edelbauer.at www.weingut-edelbauer.at Winemaker/Contact: Christoph Edelbauer Production: 10 % sparkling, 50 % white, 38 % red, 2 % sweet, 12 hectares Fairs: Millésime Bio, ProWein Düsseldorf, VieVinum, MondoVino Distribution partners: DK, DE, IT, CDN, LU, NL, CH, SK, USA to me that our winery maintains a manageable size. Only in this way can I dedicate myself with conviction to the entire process of vinification,” explains Christoph. He cultivates his vineyards organically, he had his new building constructed according to energy efficient principles, and the air conditioning in his cellar is provided by environmentally-friendly ground air collectors. The design of Edelbauer’s equipment is also reduced and all the more memorable: Direct screen printing on the bottles replaces the labels, the cartons are printed in a minimalist manner, and business cards and stationery are Christoph Edelbauer 84 falstaff WINE GUIDE 2022/23 * Kamptal DAC ** Kamptal DAC Reserve 85
