With 3,907 hectares, Kamptal is also one of the country’s larger wine-growing areas. C ulture and tourism play a very important role in Kamptal, which is further enhanced with winery taverns and wine shops. In Heiligenstein, Kamptal has one of the most striking vineyards in Austria with unique soil: desert sandstone with volcanic components dating back to the Permian period 270 million years ago. Powerful, age-worthy Rieslings grow on its steep, terraced south-facing slope. Toward the Danube River soils alter; loess and loam terraces provide excellent conditions for numerous other wine styles. Next to Grüner Veltliner, Burgundian varieties and Blauer Zweigelt thrive excellently. The interplay of a hot Pannonian climate and cool influences from the Waldviertel (Forest Quarter) to the north are noticeable. The two main varieties, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling have defined the Kamptal DAC since 2008. The initial, two-tier classification system is currently experiencing a change. Origin plays a greater role in the new hierarchy of 2017, which applies to all producers. The regional Kamptal DAC wines build the base of the pyramid. Ortswein (village wines) are the next level and carry the additional name of the community in which they are grown. The single-vineyard wines comprise the peak of the pyramid. The term A.D. DONAU “reserve” is also allowed for single-vine- Stein yard wines, but there will be fewer on the market than previously.
