Only through the relentless pursuit of quality was it possible to achieve this goal, which was rewarded with the title of “Winemaker of the Year” by Falstaff magazine in 1999. The red wines are dominated by Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir, and the white wines by Grüner Veltliner, Chardonnay, and Weissburgunder. In order to meet the international demand for top wines, an additional 40 hectares of grapes from contracted winegrowers are processed according to strictly controlled guidelines. Furthermore, in order to be able to meet the challenges of modern viticulture with its enormously evolved know-how, the family built one of the most modern winery facilities in Austria in 2001. Gerhard Markowitsch’s goal is to make the terroir of Carnuntum tangible in his wines. For him, this means increased use of autochthonous grape varieties such as Zweigelt, but also the use of international varieties in order to develop a clear profile in the global wine market. With the M1 of the 2004 vintage, Markowitsch won the prestigious “Erste Bank Reserve Trophy” at the Falstaff Red Wine Awards in 2007, and in 2012 he came second overall with the Rosenberg 2010. In autumn 2015, Gerhard Markowitsch again won the “Erste Bank Reserve Trophy” with the 2012 vintage M1, and in November 2017 he became the second Falstaff winner with the Cuvée Rosenberg. Finally, in 2019, he brought the coveted Falstaff Red Wine Award victory to Lower Austria with the 2017 Cuvée Ried Rosenberg, and in autumn 2020, he again came in 2nd place.
