NIEDERÖSTERREICH/LOWER AUSTRIA Peter, Hannes and Christoph Artner WEINGUT ARTNER The history of the Artner winery dates back to 1650. Even the family ancestors recognised the huge potential of the region for viticulture. In what was once a mixed agricultural business, the family has increasingly focused on the production of wines with authenticity and character since the 1980s. Höflein is located in the Carnuntum wine-growing region, which stretches east of Vienna and south of the Danube to the Slovakian border. Strong loess and barren limestone soils, together with the Pannonian climate and the cooling influence of the Danube, provide ideal conditions for the vines growing here. Since the winery was accepted into the circle of Austria’s traditional wineries in 2018, there has been an even greater focus on provenance when working in the vineyard. The members of the association “Traditionsweingüter Österreich” see it as their obligation to express the characteristics of their region, their soils, their climate, their varieties and their cellars through the wines. Hannes Artner took over the winery from his father and, as a creative pioneer, gave the business a qualitative direction from a young age. His son Peter is cellar master, and concentrates all his knowledge and passion into the wines. Hannes’ brother Christoph is responsible for international sales. At the winery they all pull together, because the Artners are a family who believe in cohesion, hard work, passing on knowledge as well as learning new things and, ultimately, that it is worthwhile to never deviate from one’s own quality standards. 40 hectares of vineyards are cultivated and, from the 2021 vintage on, the Artner winery will be certified as an organic winery. 93 Chardonnay * massive a. On a total of 50 hectares of vineyards, red and white grapes thrive with their character shaped by nature and the weather. With the 2018 vintage, wines with organic certification were released onto the market for the first time. The white wines possess fruitiness and minerality and have a typicity that is adapted to the vintage. All red wines, which account for about 65 percent of the vineyards, are fermented on the skins in steel tanks or wooden fermentation vats and then aged in barriques and large wooden barrels for up to 15 months. New to the range are a Göttlesbrunn local wine made from Blaufränkisch and a white wine cuvée called “Göttlesbrunn Weiß”. The cuvée “Gotinsprun”, which has been vinified by Walter Glatzer since 1992, is considered to CARNUNTUM DAC be the forerunner of local wines in Carnuntum. The St. Laurent Altenberg was renamed St. Laurent Alte Reben due to the new DAC rules and is thus the successor to the Falstaff award-winning wine of the 2018 red wine awards. Since 2019, Weingut Glatzer has been a member of the “Traditionsweingüter Österreich”.
