The Vienna Cobenzl Winery is one of Vienna’s most important wineries and has been owned by the City of Vienna for over 110 years. Here, under the management of Thomas Podsednik, outstanding quality wines are produced from around 60 hectares of vineyards in Grinzing, on the Nussberg and on the Bisamberg. The unique microclimate with Pannonian influence and the proximity to the Danube are the ideal conditions for fine-fruited, mineral wines. The vineyards with resounding names such as Ried Pfeffer, Ried Seidenhaus and Ried Bellevue (“Beautiful View”) have always been among the best in the city. With a lot of passion, prestigious wines are produced here according to biodynamic principles. Fritz Wieninger, the pioneer of the highest quality wines in Vienna, took over the winery in 2014 and focuses on Wiener Gemischter Satz as well as Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The vineyards, the majority of which belong to star architect Heinz Neumann, are located in the best Viennese sites, with the Nussberg site playing a central role. The mineral shell limestone and limestone weathered soils give the wine a lot of depth and expression. The secret behind the WIENER GEMISCHTER SATZ DAC wine quality is biodynamic viticulture: the winery has been working according to these principles since 2006. The focus is on the vineyard ecosystem with all its facets, and the vines enjoy a lot of manual work. In the wine cellar, too, work is done gently and in a reduced manner. You can taste all of this in Hajszan Neumann’s lively wines: each has a characteristic soul that develops from the natural aroma of the grape and the terroir. Fritz Wieninger goes one step further with his “Natural” line. These wines fermented on the skins are characterized by complete restraint in the cellar and are vinified without any intervention and bottled unfiltered.
