International demand is also growing in this sector, and Austria’s vintners would be wise to be among the pioneers in this segment. Another striking development is evident in the sparkling wine sector: Never before have so many sparkling wines been submitted to the Falstaff Wine Guide. This is a positive signal that the marketing efforts are beginning to bear fruit. The sparkling wine quality pyramid and the introduction of the new term Sekt Austria has been well received by consumers. The Pet Nats, which appeal to a younger target group in the sparkling wine category, are particularly popular in the alternative segment. Natural Wines and Orange Wines have also established themselves, ensuring that younger target groups are interested in wine and beginning to engage with the concept. On the other hand, the past few years have brought us new grape varieties, primarily fungus-resistant cultivars and so-called PIWIs, and some are slowly gaining a foothold. New names like Blossom Muscat, Muscaris, or Souvignier Gris will probably have to be well noted. The greatest challenge for the future of viticulture will be global climate change, and it is necessary to respond to this phenomenon with foresight. However, 2021 is the best proof that, despite all the scenarios, there will always be pretty normal years ahead. It was a summer like in the olden days - and ultimately, there were wines like perhaps never before. Exciting and varied times lie ahead for vintners and consumers alike, and we will be pleased to accompany them in the future with our critical comments and advise you on the best choice of wines. As usual, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who have contributed to this 25th edition and to the wineries who have confidently placed their wines in our attentive care during this extraordinary period. Only their skill and admirable work make this guide possible in the first place. And so that our winegrowers can still produce the best possible wines in the future for their customers, they must receive a fair price for their excellent products.
