travel / SKI RESORTS VAL

travel / SKI RESORTS VAL D’ISÈRE It is considered one of the best deep-snow areas in the world. In the winter sports paradise of Val d’Isère in the French Northern Alps close to the Italian border, the skiing season lasts until May. You can even ski in the summer on the Grande Motte glacier beneath the 3,400-metre Pointe du Monet peak. Up to 20 kilometres of slopes and five lifts remain open in summer. The tranquil commune, which is home to about 1,700 people, has retained its original charm and character. When you see the traditional wooden houses with slate roofs and the baroque church, you know you are in a real mountain village. Even the newer buildings reflect the traditional style. The atmosphere is cosmopolitan; there are smart hotels that attract a young target market as well as luxurious chalets. There is a network of 153 slopes extending to a total of 300 kilometres and a maximum elevation difference of 1,900 metres. All of the slopes converge at the edge of the village, which makes it easy for people to meet up. There are plenty of runs suitable for beginners and children, and the longer rolling pistes on the local Bellevarde mountain are also beginner-friendly. At the foot of the Bellevarde, you’ll find a small museum devoted to the history of the village – and of course of Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy, after whom the ski area is named. Although Val d’Isère has its share of modern buildings, the townscape has preserved its traditional appearance. 76 falstaff winter 2022/23

VIVA LA NEIGE – LONG LIVE THE SNOW: The winter sports season in Val d’Isère is unusually long. In fact, you can even strap into your slats in summer on some of the resort’s highest slopes. Even so, the main season runs from early December until late April, when both young people and families with children make their way to the French Alps. ELEGANCE MEETS TOP CUISINE: Thanks to its contemporary design and first-rate cuisine, the Le K2 Chogori hotel (centre left and right) is popular with guests from all over the world. MOUNTAIN VIEW: Delicious food and drinks with a view are par for the course at Gigi Val d’Isère too (bottom left), the restaurant at Le Refuge de Solaise.
