travel / SKI RESORTS ST MORITZ M ore than just a resort – St Moritz is a legend. What is probably the world’s most famous winter sports destination was not only the first place in Switzerland to have electric light (1878) but was also the first Swiss town to have a ski lift (1935). It has always been a glamorous getaway for the international jet set, who threw legendary parties in St Tropez in the summer and played polo on the frozen lake in St Moritz in the winter. This closed circle was led by the German-Swiss playboy and industrialist heir Gunter Sachs, whose activities kept the paparazzi busy. Sachs was the bon vivant responsible for bringing stars and starlets to St Moritz including Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn as well as the director Alfred Hitchcock, who stayed at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, which is believed to have provided the inspiration for his classic film The Birds. St Moritz has succeeded in maintaining its reputation as the home of the rich and beautiful. Virtually nowhere else boasts so many grand hotels, luxury boutiques, top restaurants and galleries. Glamour, lifestyle and ostentatious displays of wealth are still the order of the day. But the true luxury of St Moritz is to be found in its incredibly beautiful pistes, which are rarely crowded and offer a magnificent view of the Engadine peaks. Although St Moritz’s local mountain, Corviglia, is home to the steepest slope in Switzerland, it also has pistes suitable for beginners. Snow is guaranteed. And the Upper Engadine is renowned for its sunny climate. The sophisticated resort of St Moritz, home to the rich and beautiful, is set against a fabulous mountain backdrop. 52 falstaff winter 2022/23

The panorama from the Hotel Carlton (above left, below) is equally impressive. BREAKFAST FOR THE GODS: The Romanoff Restaurant (above right) in the Hotel Carlton serves international classics in the evening and a rich breakfast in the morning – all in elegant surroundings. SNOW POLO WORLD CUP: This event (centre right) has been held on the frozen Lake St Moritz on the last weekend in January ever since 1895. From the grandstand you have a view of the game – and the mountains. Warm up afterwards in a spa like the one in the Kulm Hotel (centre). winter 2022/23 falstaff 53
