destinations / SUMMER HOTSPOTS THE ALGARVE WILL CAPTURE YOUR IMAGINATION WITH ITS INSTAGRAM-WORTHY COASTLINE AND SECLUDED BAYS THAT CAN ONLY BE REACHED BY BOAT. 72 falstaff jul-sep 2022

No holiday in the Algarve is complete without plenty of time by the sea, admiring the beaches and rock formations (right and centre right). New hotels like the VILA VITA Parc Resort (bottom) offer approachable luxury and the finest haute cuisine. The two Michelinstar Vila Joya restaurant (centre left), has been a firm favourite with visitors for more than two decades. Thanks to its breathtaking coastal scenery, the Algarve which is both the western- and southernmost part of the country (the name Algarve comes from Arabic and means “the West”), has recently become the number one hotspot for coast-loving sun worshippers. While it is actually on the Atlantic Ocean, the region boasts a Mediterranean climate, guaranteeing a daily dose of vitamin D. However, the picturesque beaches are just the icing on the cake in a region that is idyllic through and through: healthy local food, charming little villages, fragrant fig and peach orchards, vast expanses of virtually untouched countryside and ancient castles that give a deep insight into Portugal’s turbulent history, make for a stay full of impressions, experiences and adventure. The Algarve is an absolute paradise for golfers too – it is no coincidence that it is one of Europe’s most attractive golf destinations and a magnet for avid players from all over the world. Many of the courses were designed by famous golf architects, besides being challenging and varied, they offer plenty to please the eye as well. The number of exclusive resorts, outstanding restaurants and lively bars in the Algarve has increased significantly in recent years. But, as has always been the case, the majority of what makes life here so enjoyable takes place outdoors, which is why summer dining often goes hand in hand with unrivalled views. It goes without saying that there is an abundance of freshly caught fish and seafood that comes straight out of the Atlantic and onto dining tables. Be sure to try Cataplana de mariscos, a hearty mix of lobster, shrimp and everything the ocean has to offer, cooked in a delicious white wine and tomato sauce and flavoured with lots of fresh herbs. Summer tastes unbelievably good here, especially after an invigorating swim... < jul-sep 2022 falstaff 73
