destinations / SUMMER HOTSPOTS IT’S BEST TO LEAVE YOUR PARTY CLOTHES AT HOME AND PACK A PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS AND AN EXTRA SWIMSUIT INSTEAD. Tranquility Olé! If you think all Balearic Islands are the same, you clearly have never been to Menorca: the small island boasts country clubs instead of clubbing and restorative siestas instead of vibrant fiestas. You’ll find charming boutique hotels such as Can Alberti 1740 in Mahón or Faustino Gran in Ciutadella (centre left and bottom). The gastronomic scene is rooted in local culture and regional produce, but is growing increasingly exclusive with the addition of Michelingrade places such as the acclaimed Rels restaurant (centre right). The adventurous can discover Menorca on horseback (inset). 66 falstaff jul-sep 2022

Photos: Adobe Stock, Daniel Schaefer, Shutterstock, supplied Unlike Mallorca or Ibiza, the island of Menorca is the opposite of a booming party destination – the smallest of the Balearic Islands is still a largely undiscovered gem in the Mediterranean Sea. Far removed from throngs of tourists and mainstream attractions, visitors come here to slow down, chill out and soak up the sun. After all, life on the quaint Spanish island moves at a much slower pace. Discovering Menorca is a joy for lovers of nature: not only are the beaches among the most beautiful in the world, there are also a great number of them. In fact, Menorca’s coastline is longer than Mallorca’s and Ibiza’s combined. Intrepid visitors have more than 200 small coves to explore, including secluded spots that offer total privacy amid breathtaking surroundings. The shores are characterised by fine white sand, while the sea’s crystal clear waters dazzle the eye. For beach lovers, Menorca is a veritable dream come true. Experienced equestrians, giddy up! Touring the island on horseback along an extensive bridle path, the so-called Camí de Cavalls, is a unique and enjoyable way to discover its beautiful scenery – while providing an incredible photo op for your Instagram feed. It follows the entire coastline and is also great for hikers and walkers keen to explore the pictureque island. As can be expected from a fertile Spanish island, Menorca’s food scene is unassuming but fantastic. A variety of tapas prepared from local ingredients and freshly caught treasures from the sea are at the top of the menu. If you like fish and seafood, you should definitely try one of Menorca’s iconic dishes, caldereta de llagosta, a hearty lobster stew that truly explodes with sumptuous, summery flavours. < jul-sep 2022 falstaff 67
