destinations / SUMMER

destinations / SUMMER HOTSPOTS PUGLIA HAS REAL SOUTHERN CHARM AND MUCH AUTHENTICITY – AND IS STILL PRACTICALLY UNTOUCHED BY MASS TOURISM. Authentic style and a rich history: Puglia is distinguished by its rich soil, gleaming white cities and crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. Architecturally, the region is influenced by the style of ancient Greece, as can be seen in the coastal town of Polignano a Mare (bottom right). A defining characteristic unique to Puglia are traditional trulli: dry stone huts with conical roofs dating to the Middle Ages once inhabited by farm labourers. Masserias, ancient farmhouses, such as San Domenico (this page) have been converted into luxurious holiday accommodation. Puglia is also a favourite for foodie travellers. 60 falstaff jul-sep 2022

For a long time, the magical region existed in the shadow of better known Italian destinations such as Sicily and Tuscany. While other parts of the country evolved into mass tourism hubs, Puglia remained practically untouched, which possibly explains its enchanting appeal as a shining example of southern Italian beauty, complete with century-old olive groves and pristine beaches. Add warm-hearted Puglian hospitality and authentic local cuisine, and the heel of Italy’s boot emerges as an unforgettable destination for travellers who want to experience Italy at its most original. Puglia is a particular heaven for lovers of good food. It is known for its handmade pasta (the region is world-famous for the small, round orecchiette), delicious vegetables, fresh seafood, indigenous wines and local extra virgin olive oil. Puglians also take great pride in their cheeses: soft and delicate burrata, which has become all the rage in recent years, as well as lesser known varieties such as cacioricotta, a fresh, seasonal cheese made from sheep’s or goat’s milk. In addition to magnificent luxury hotels that epitomise Puglia’s unique character, traditional masserias, ancient farmhouses, now offer lovely accommodation where guests can expect charm and authenticity in equal measure. Breakfast consisting of fresh strawberries and warm pasticciotti (local cream filled pastries) makes for an extra dolce start to the day. < jul-sep 2022 falstaff 61
