trends / CRUISING & YACHTING Relax by the pool: The new luxury ship Explora (left), launching in 2023, features a spacious spa. Travellers embarking on a cruise holiday used to fall into two distinct camps. One wanted a cruise ship with all the bells and whistles plus a hint of elegance: a gym, an extensive spa and pool, an official black-tie captain’s dinner, shops on board and a West End-worthy entertainment programme. At the other end of the spectrum you had those who wanted to feel like adventurers, exploring remote regions without fripperies or frivolities. If you wanted to travel to places like Antarctica, you knew you would be travelling on a spartan ship, usually a former research vessel converted for tourists whose luggage consisted solely of sturdy, functional attire. While this undoubtedly holds a certain attraction, what is wrong with watching wildlife and icebergs while you sit in an outdoor Jacuzzi and sip a glass of fizz? LUXURY FOR ALL One of the most recent trends is the acknowledgment that adventure and luxury do not have to be mutually exclusive. Ships have transformed themselves into 5-star hotels while also boasting all the scientific equipment of an oceanographic research vessel. Just like flying, the overall trend is to travel less, but to do so in style and in a private jet. One consequence of the pandemic is a reluctance to mix with crowds; people want more space and are eschewing cramped cabins without a private balcony. Modern cruise yachts now exclusively offer suites with a sea view and private balcony; most suite categories now include a bespoke butler service. The renowned hotel group Ritz -Carlton has set a new standard with its yacht EVRIMA, which features elegantly furnished suites, private balconies and luxurious dining areas far removed from the canteen style found on many other ships. Designed for just 298 guests, the yacht delivers an intimate experience with the added benefit of conviviality when required. Sophisticated luxury. With large terraces as part of every suite, the Ritz-Carlton yacht EVRIMA sets new standards in cruising. THE YACHT BOOM CONTINUES According to the 2021 Fraser Yacht market report, there are around 2,900 yachts longer than 24 metres available for charter in the world today – and the fleet keeps growing. This development is being driven by several key trends: a post-pandemic surge in the desire for privacy with guests wanting to feel like they are in a floating home, and increasingly sophisticated on-board furnishings.
